Private services for Mr. Niclas were held at National Cemetery, Arsenal Island, where military honors were conducted by Milan American Legion Post No. 569/200 and the Rock Island VFW Post No. 1303. Memorials may be made to the QCPaws, affiliated with the Rock Island County Animal Care and Control, Moline, Black Hawk Council of the Telephone Pioneers of America or to the American Heart Association. Wheelan-Pressly Funeral Home, Milan, assisted the family.
Henry was born on April 1, 1921, in Chicago, a son of George and Gertrude Melone Niclas. He married June Olson on Sept. 8, 1945, in Chicago. She preceded him in death on July 4, 2003.
Henry worked in the accounting department at the Illinois Bell Telephone Co., Chicago, for 37 years, retiring in 1977. He moved from Chicago to the Quad-Cities in 1989.
Henry was a member of the Skokie American Legion Post No. 320 for 62 years and was a past commander of the post. He was a World War II Marine Corps veteran, serving in the Pacific Theater. Once a Marine, always a Marine. Henry was also a member of the Black Hawk Council of the Telephone Pioneers of America. He was a snowbird and enjoyed spending his winters at his home in Pompano Beach, Fla.
Survivors include his daughters, Marcia Gallagher, Coal Valley, and Valerie (Bud) Niclas Hodges, Coal Valley. Mr. Niclas was preceded in death by his parents; wife, June; a brother; and sister.
