LaVance W. Moore, 85, of Rock Island, died Wednesday, July 25, 2012, at Trinity Rock Island.

Funeral services will be held at 2nd Baptist Church in Rock Island on Tuesday, July 31, at noon, with visitation service at 11 a.m. Burial will be at the National Cemetery, Arsenal Island, with military honors by American Legions 569/200 and VFW 1303. Memorials may be made to the family.

Mr. Moore was born on Oct. 19, 1926, in Davenport, the son of Robert Moore and Thelma Bynum Moore. He attended schools in Rock Island and Davenport, graduating from Davenport High School, where he was a stand-out athlete, excelling in track, football and baseball. He also enjoyed bowling. He married Barbara Holland on Dec. 29, 1952, in Rock Island. Mr. Moore was a World War II United States Navy veteran.

LaVance worked many years for American Container Corporation, the Caterpillar Company, and was employed for more than 20 years with United States Postal Service, Rock Island, retiring in 1989.

He was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Rock Island, Knights of Columbus Allouez Council 658 and had been one of the original members of Rock Island Elks Esquire Lodge 1648.

A family and community patriarch, Mr. Moore was a committed and dedicated husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle and friend to many. His generosity and smile will not be forgotten.

Survivors include his beloved wife of 60 years, Barbara; children, Michael Moore, Peoria, Ill., Rodney (Nancy) Moore, Harvey, La., Shellie Moore Guy, Rock Island, Beth Anne (Jeff) Lam, Rock Island, and Marc Moore, Rock Island; grandchildren, Robert, Bethany, John, George, DeShawn, Machelle, Lachelle, Jeffery, Stephen and Cherie; 20 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandson; a sister, Elizabeth Quick, Rock Island; and many nieces, nephews, and a host of friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Robert and Gail; and sister, Pearline.
