Report: Chicago police spent $18M on disability

CHICAGO (AP) — A published report says Chicago pays $18 million a year for police officers on disability, including those who pursue degrees and start new careers. It's money that comes out of an underfunded pension system subsidized by taxpayers. The Chicago Sun-Times reports that (http://bit.ly/Ou5DNs) that 347 officers are on disability. That includes the case of a 57-year-old who injured his shoulder 20 years ago. Since then he hasn't worked as a cop, but went to law school, opened a practice and continued hobbies like big-game hunting. He's collected more than $715,000 in disability. The newspaper says police officers are the only city employees allowed to work an outside job on disability leave. Police officials acknowledge that some officers are taking advantage of the system while the mayor's spokesperson calls it 'shameful.' ___ Information from: Chicago Sun-Times, http://www.suntimes.com/index
