Annual Bike Path Cleanup - The Keep Rock Island Beautiful Annual Bike Path Cleanup will be held on Saturday, May 19, 2012. All volunteers will meet at the City of Rock Island parking lot at the corner of 20th Street and 1st Avenue at 8:00 am. The cleanup is usually completed by 11:00 am. All cleanup supplies, gloves, and bottled water will be provided. For more information, contact Carolyn Fuller of Keep Rock Island Beautiful at (309) 786-1334.

New Community & Economic Development Director Announced - City Manager Thomas Thomas announced Jeff Eder will be the new Community & Economic Development Director for the City of Rock Island. His official start date will be June 4, 2012. Mr. Eder most recently worked as the Director of Community Development for the Village of Franklin Park, Illinois. Mr. Eder will be responsible for planning, organizing, and directing the activities of the Community and Economic Development Department. Mr. Eder has a Masters of Business Administration from Indiana University (1997) and Bachelor of Urban Planning and Development and Bachelor of Science in Environmental Design from Ball State University (1993). In addition, he is an Economic Development Institute Graduate from the University of Oklahoma (2002).

Road Closure, Northbound 24th Street off Blackhawk Road - Beginning today, Monday, May 14, 2012 the northbound lane on 24th Street from Blackhawk Road to the south entrance of the Rock Island Fitness and Activity Center (RIFAC) will be closed due to an emergency storm sewer repair. RIFAC will be open during normal business hours. Please follow all posted construction signs for detour directions and watch for trucks entering and leaving the construction zone. The anticipated date for resuming traffic is Friday, May 18, 2012. The City of Rock Island is sorry for any inconvenience due to this road closure and appreciates the patience and consideration of the traveling public.

2012 Heart Walk – The 2012 Heart Walk to raise awareness and funds for the American Heart Association will take place Saturday May 19, 2012 at the Great River Plaza in the District of Rock Island. Festivities begin at 8:00 am and the walk starts at 9:30 am. Register to walk at www.quadcitiesheartwalk.org or call (563) 323-4321.

1938 -- 75 years ago: Poppies were blooming today at the headquarters of the Rock Islandunit of the American Legion auxiliary at the Y.M.C.A. as the little red memorial flowers, which the people of Rock Island will wear in honor of veterans.
1963 -- 50 years ago: One hundred and fifty of the best show horses in Illinois and Iowaare expected to compete tomorrow for some $500 in trophies, ribbons and prize money inthe first major horse show of the season.
1988 -- 25 years ago: Moline Public Hospital presented blue ribbons to the winnersof a recent poster contest, held in conjunction with National Hospital Week. Utilizingthe theme of "You're Our Specialty," the following were grand prize winners: MindyBenson, Moline; Thao Dang, Moline; Gared Laux, Moline; John Murphy, Rock Island;Justin Pulford and Bennie Jo Starkey, Moline.
