Trio of Augie softball players earn All-CCIW honors

Two Quad-Cities softball products were named to the All-CCIW team on Monday.

Augustana senior center fielder Jillian Gibbs, a Rock Island graduate, was named to the first team. Courtney Ledezma, a United Township graduate and Augie sophomore, was named to the second team.

Also on the All-CCIW second team for Augie was sophomores Krista Watson of Coal City.

Gibbs hit .313 with six home runs and 17 RBIs this season. Watson, a shortstop, led Augustana with a .380 average as well as a .570 slugging percentage and .429 on-base percentage. Ledezma, a first baseman and pitcher, was the Vikings' RBI leader with 26. She hit .344 with two home runs and a team-leading four triples. In the circle, she went 8-6 with a 2.98 ERA and struck out 66 in 91 2/3 innings.

Although she's been teaching for 43 years at the school, Miss Dayfound a new way of arriving at the school this morning. At 7:30 a.m., a police squad carpulled up in front of Miss Day's home and escorted her to school. A caravan of students' cars joined the procession along the way.
1988 -- 25 years ago: Barbecue cooking and riverfront antics are planned for Discover the
River Day Saturday in Leach Park, Bettendorf. A 5K run, wind surfing, a canoe race, hogcalling and more will round out the day under the Interstate 74 bridge.
