Arden J. DeReu, 93, of Geneseo, died Saturday, May 5, 2012, at Geneseo Good Samaritan Village.

A funeral Mass celebrating his life will be 11 a.m. Wednesday, May 9, at St. Malachy's Catholic Church, Geneseo. Father Michael Pakula will officiate. Burial will be at St. Anthony's Cemetery, Atkinson, with military services at the graveside. Visitation will be 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the Geneseo chapel of Stackhouse-Moore Funeral Services with a parish rosary at 8 p.m. There also will be a one-hour visitation prior to the service at the church. Memorials may be made to the Arden DeReu Memorial Fund.

Arden was born Aug. 5, 1918, in Atkinson, son of Eli M. and Louise DeGrave DeReu. He was educated in Atkinson schools and graduated from Atkinson High School in 1936.

Arden worked for John Deere and J.I. Case and then spent 42 months in the Army Ordnance during World War II in the South Pacific. He attended Virginia Tech, the University of Hawaii and graduated from St. Ambrose College in 1948. His marriage to Dorothy J. Bolte took place on May 5, 1956, in Geneseo. She died July 27, 2001.

He was president of DeReu Skelgas in Geneseo for 40 years, retiring in 1988. He was past president of the Illinois L.P. Gas Association.

Arden's memberships included St. Malachy's Catholic Church, Geneseo, Catholic Order of Foresters and Holy Name Society, and he served as extra ordinary minister for 25 years. He served for many years as the Geneseo Police Commissioner and on the Zoning Board of Appeals. He was also a member of the Loyal Order of the Moose 990, Geneseo, the Geneseo American Legion and VFW, the Henry County 40&8 and the Moline Viking Club.

Survivors include his sons and daughters-in-law, David and Suzanne DeReu, Geneseo, and Roger and Dara DeReu, Texas; grandchildren, Robert, Anthony and Elizabeth DeReu and Veronica, Victoria, and Vanessa DeReu; sister-in-law, Norma Starr, Moline; and good friend, Elizabeth Gradert. He was preceded in death by his wife; his parents; a son, Robert; a sister; and three brothers.
