Geneseo defends NIB12 girls' track title

STREATOR -- The Geneseo girls' track team successfully defended its Northern Illinois Big 12 Conference title on Friday night. In the process, the Maple Leafs made sure head coach Phil Paulson went out a winner. Geneseo tallied 114 points to win its second consecutive NIB12 title, 20 more than runner-up Dixon. The title allows Paulson, who recently announced his retirement, to close his career with one more conference championship. "Tremendous," Paulson said. "The girls ran tremendously well. That's pretty satisfying." As has been the case in recent weeks, the Maple Leafs were strong in the field and on the track. In winning their fourth meet title in the last three weeks, they won three individual titles and two relays. Senior Kaci Storm won the 100- and 300-meter hurdles titles for the second consecutive season, running a 14.92 and 47.05, respectively. Storm set the school record in the 100 hurdles. "She always brings it," Paulson said of Storm. "She was on her 'A' game." Senior Darrian Hartman cleared 10-feet-3 to win the pole vault. Capping the Geneseo titles were the 4x100 and 4x200 relays. Hannah Waller, Rayne Bodeen and Samantha Mannon ran legs on each title-winning relay. Ashley Kempher (4x100) and Storm (4x200) also were part of the relay wins. "Those were awesome," Paulson said. Bodeen (100), Waller (300 hurdles), Jamie DeFauw (high jump) and the 4x400 each had runner-up finishes. All those performances helped the Maple Leafs lay claim as the only girls' track champion in the two-year-old conference's history. "This means a lot for the kids and the program," Paulson said. "The fact we won it last year and this year, it's not a fluke. ... The kids are developing a tradition. That's something special."
