John A. Davidson, 85, Rockford, Ill., loving husband, dad and "Opi," passed away Sunday, April 29, 2012, in Alden Debes of bone cancer, with his loving family by his bedside.

Memorial gathering will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday, May 4, at Fitzgerald Funeral Home & Crematory, Mulford Chapel, 1860 S. Mulford Road, Rockford, Ill.

He was born June 12, 1926, in Iowa, son of Lucille and Marland Davidson. He graduated from Rock Island High School. He married Eleonore "Lore" Rahn on Dec. 6, 1958, in Rock Island.

John, alongside his wife, successfully owned and operated Cash Register Sales and Service on School Street for 54 years. He was often called "The Cash Register Man." He was also warmly known as "the man with the eyebrows." During that time, he belonged to the Northwest Businessman Association. He and his wife retired in 1992.

He belonged to a couple of car clubs: Rockford Early Ford V8 Club and Five Point/Drag-Ons. He custom restored a 1931 Model A Ford Roadster Deluxe with a license plate that read "DADZTOY." He loved driving it to many of the gatherings for these clubs.

John and Lore were always eager to be a part of their grandkids' events. He was affectionately known as "Opi" by many of their friends.

John will always be remembered for his uncanny sense of humor and spontaneous quick wit. With perfect timing -- he would never miss a moment or opportunity to get a laugh.

John is lovingly survived by wife of 53 years, Lore; daughter, Heidi (George) Gonzalez; and son, Wolfgang (Lucy) Pietsch, Texas; adoring grandchildren, Adam Gonzalez and Amy Gonzalez; brother, Earl Dee (Bev) Davidson, Moline; brother-in-law, Harold (Elaine) Hamilton, Minnesota; numerous nieces and nephews; and many dear friends too numerous to mention.

The family would like to thank Dr. Eric Troutman for his wonderful and kind attention to John's comfort. Also a special "Thank You" to Dan, Christine, Beth, Megan, Anna, Megan and many others for all the loving special care they gave to John during his stay at Alden Debes (400 wing).

He was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Erma Engstrom and Charlotte Hamilton; sister-in-law, Nora Davidson; brother-in-law, Ralph Engstrom; and special high school buddies, Don Griffith and Jack Hoff.
