Lucy DeWaelsche, 98, of Coralville, Iowa, formerly of Moline, passed away April 23, 2012, at Lantern Park Nursing and Rehab Center, Coralville.
The family will observe a private ceremony. DeRoo Funeral Home, Moline, is handling arrangements.
Lucy was born July 18, 1913, in Moline, the daughter of Octaaf and Valerie DeFauw DeWaelsche. She attended Sacred Heart School in Moline and graduated from St. Joseph High School, Rock Island. She was employed for many, many years at Sunnyside Nurseries and Greenhouses, which was on the site of the expanded Lutheran Hospital in Moline. Always driving her own car, Lucy travelled through much of America with her nieces and nephews. She also enjoyed many visits to Belgium and Europe. After her retirement she was very active in the Center for Belgian Culture in Moline.
Lucy loved her family and was the beloved "Aunt Lu" to her many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; brother, Marcel DeWaelsche; sisters, Madeleine Coppens, Irene Staes and Germaine Thomas; nephew, Thomas DeWaelsche; and niece, Joanne Hoyt. She is survived by nieces and nephews, Kay Dellos, David Coppens, Paul Coppens, Connie Dolan, Susan Hyndman, Pat Brown, Robert Staes, Jack Thomas, Linda Powrie, Steven Thomas and Jeffrey Thomas. In recent years, Lucy was cared for by great-nephew, David Dellos, wife, Laura, and great-great-nephews, Adam and Ben Dellos, who enjoyed her wit, independence and love of politics.
