Quad Cities River Bandits manager Luis Aguayo had quite the surprise before Monday's game against the South Bend Silver Hawks at Modern Woodmen Park. Moments before the first pitch, Aguayo noticed a familiar face standing near the home dugout.|
It took Aguayo a few seconds to realize it was Rock Island's Chris Allison standing there. Aguayo was a roaming instructor in the Boston Red Sox organization in the early 1990s. One of the players Aguayo instructed was Allison, a Red Sox prospect from 1994-96.
"He was one of my favorite players," Aguayo said after the Bandits' 14-3 win.
Allison, a math teacher at Washington Junior High in Rock Island, was hoping to meet up with Aguayo after learning he was the Bandits' manager. Monday was the first time they had spoken since 1997, Allison said. Allison was at the game as the Bandits' welcomed numerous schools for Book Buddies Day.
