MACOMB, IL - - Williamsville (IL) High School Jazz Band and Prospect High School Jazz Ensemble I (Mount Prospect, IL) were named the small and large division grand champions, respectively, at the 37th Jazz Festival (Feb. 20) hosted by the School of Music jazz studies program at Western Illinois University.
Sixteen Illinois, Iowa and Missouri high school jazz bands, combos and ensembles participated in the festival, which included clinics and rehearsals with guest artist John Clayton, internationally known bassist, composer, arranger and educator, as well as Western's jazz studies faculty.
Schools were divided into seven classes: 1A high schools with an enrollment up to 345 students; 2A high schools with an enrollment of 346 to 762 students; 3A high schools with an enrollment of 763 to 1,719 students; and 4A high schools with an enrollment of 1,720 and more students; high school second bands; and combos.
Small division results include, in Class 1A:
1T – Highland High School Jazz Ensemble (Ewing, MO)
1T – Prophetstown (IL) High School (Whiteside County)
3 – ROWVA High School Jazz Band (Oneida, IL – Knox County)
4 – Illini Bluffs High School Jazz Band (Glasford, IL/Peoria County)
Class 2A:
1 – Williamsville (IL) High School Jazz Band (Sangamon County)
2 – Tri-Valley High School Jazz Band (Downs, IL/McLean County)
Large division results include, in Class 3A:
1 – Prospect High School Jazz Ensemble I (Mt. Prospect, IL/Cook County)
2 – Davenport (IA) Central High School Jazz Band I
3 – Naperville (IL) Central High School Jazz Studio Orchestra (DuPage County)
Class 3A:
1 – Mahomet (IL)-Seymour High School Jazz Band, 3A (Champaign County)
Senior high second bands division trophies were presented to the following:
1 – Bolingbrook (IL) High School Jazz Band II (Will County)
2 – Prospect High School Jazz Ensemble II (Mt. Prospect, IL/Cook County)
3 – Dunlap (IL) High School Maroon Jazz Band, 2nd bands (Peoria County)
Senior high combo division trophies were presented to:
1 – Prospect High School Jazz Combo (Mt. Prospect, IL/Cook County)
2 – Naperville (IL) Central High School Combo 1 (DuPage County)
