Rock Island County Extension's Winter Line-Up of Programs and Events Has Something for Everyone!

University of Illinois Extension, Rock Island County has plenty of fun educational programs and events to keep adults and youth active and warm inside this winter! From cooking to art appreciation, fitness to youth classes, a Trivia Fundraiser to several lunch and learn programs, there is something for everyone! Horticulture Brown Bag Lunch Series, Thurs, Feb 4—March 25; 12:30—1:15 p.m.

Get a touch of the gardening spirit this winter. Bring a lunch to enjoy as Rock Island County Extension horticulture staff, Master Gardeners and other local experts present on an array of topics:

Nursery School: Lessons in Gardening, Sat, February 27, 8:00 am—4:00 pm, iwireless Center, Moline

Now in its 14th year, Nursery School is recognized as one of the Quad Cities premiere gardening symposiums!

University of Illinois Extension, Rock Island County Master Gardeners bring together renowned local and regional horticulture experts to provide 15 different workshops on diverse topics. The $45 fee includes continental breakfast, sit-down luncheon, afternoon snacks, handouts and outstanding lessons. Shop from gardening vendors and have a chance to win fabulous door prizes! Nursery School is the perfect opportunity to reconnect with friends and get re-inspired for another successful gardening season!

This year's event begins with a Keynote Address by Richard Hawke of the Chicago Botanic Garden who will share a program on Tried and True: Proven Perennials. Workshop session topics include Theme Gardens; 2010 Perennials and Annuals; Demystifying Organics; Cut Flowers; Monarch Butterflies; Evergreens & Deciduous Plants; Shade Gardening; Weather Q & A; Miniature Landscapes; Tiger Balm Workshop, and more! Lunch & Learn with Extension on February 10 for free program on Balancing Work and Life at Noon in Milan, University of Illinois Extension, Rock Island County invites the public to learn something new over lunch the 2nd Wednesday of each mon. Bring a sack lunch to 321 West 2nd Ave in Milan, IL and enjoy a free teleconference program broadcast from the University campus. On Wednesday, February 10 the focus is on Intentional Harmony: How to Balance Work and Personal Life. Work-life stress has an impact on emotional and physical well-being and on relationships with family members. One of the biggest challenges in managing work-life is that problems tend to spill over from work to home, and from home to work. Tips are offered on handling conflicting demands and learning to separate work life and home life. You will develop a personal plan for work/life harmony. Family Life Cheryl Byers and Rachel Schwarzendruber from University of Illinois Extension will present a powerpoint presentation via teleconference and live audio connection. Rock Island County Extension offers Tai Chi, 7 pm Tuesdays now thru Feb 23

Get introduced to Tai Chi through the Five Elements form and Qi Gong exercises. Using music and poetic imagery as your guide, you will learn to move gently and fluidly as you improve balance, concentration, and experience renewed energy and vitality! $5 per session.

Art Appreciation for Everyone! Saturdays, 1:30-3:30 p.m. January 30, Feb. 6, 13, 20

Come to Rock Island County Extension on Saturday afternoons to learn about famous artists and art movements throughout history in a relaxed and thoughtful environment. No slide memorization or tests, instead you'll enjoy a lecture and then a beginner friendly project based on the day's lesson. $10 per class.

Jan 30- Baroque, French Roccoco, Neoclassicism, Romanticism

Feb 6- Impressionism, Post Impressionism, Fauves, Cubism

Feb 13- Dadaism, Surrealism, Mexican Muralists, WPA Artists, Regionalist;

Healthy Cooking & Lunch with Donna Thurs, Jan 7—March 25; 12—1:00 p.m.

Come to Rock Island County Extension on Thursdays for a cooking class that includes your for lunch as Donna Buechler cooks up easy and delicious dishes that make your meal planning almost effortless. You'll learn new recipes, how to make traditional favorites more healthy, cooking with herbs, low cost recipes, shopping tips, cooking for one or two, using leftovers, meal planning on a budget, and more! The program concludes with the sharing of a meal. $6 per session.

Slow Cooking Thurs, February 16, 1:30-3:00 p.m. OR 5:30-7:00 p.m.

Do you have a slow cooker/crockpot in your kitchen or storage that you aren't using to your best advantage? If so, this workshop is for you! Get ideas and recipes on how you can use the slow cooker to help prepare nutritious meals. Enjoy samples of the variety of recipes. Fee $10.00

Freezer Meals Tuesday, February 2, 1:30—3:00 pm

Having meals prepared and in your freezer that you can cook or heat in a quick time can be a great help. Learn how to prepare once and serve twice with foods that will freeze well for future use. Enjoy hands-on food preparation, receive recipes for great tasting meals, enjoy samples of foods prepared, and take one dish home for their family to enjoy now or later! Cost is $10

Comfort Foods—Tues., February 9, 16, 23, 1:30—3:30 or 5:30—6:30 pm

Emotionally significant, comfort foods are a salve for the soul in ways that go beyond enjoyment of the food alone. Join us as we explore, cook and eat our way through these favored meals. $10 per session/ $25 for series.

Healthy Heart, Healthy YOU Saturday, February 13, 9 am—Noon

February is heart health month. Changing the way we cook our food can have a dramatic effect on our health. Discover how heart healthy cooking tips and tricks can turn you into a healthy cook extraordinaire! Recipes & samples. $10.

FOR YOUTH & FAMILIES

Youth and their parents are invited to make their Saturday Super as they explore one subject in depth and create a hands-on, make and take project! Each program runs from 9:00 am—Noon and costs $10, includes all supplies. Half-fee tuition waivers are available. Great for youth ages 9 and up. Parents/families are encouraged to participate together. Youth ages 5 – 8 can attend with an adult.

Saturday, February 6—Baking from the Heart, 9 am – Noon.

Learn to bake and decorate tasty treats to give your loved ones for Valentine's Day! In this hands-on baking class, youth will get to learn how to make a variety of special sweets, cakes and candies. Parents are welcome and encouraged to attend. Children ages 9 and older are welcome without a guardian. Youth ages 5 – 8 should be accompanied by an adult. $10. Per person, includes treats to take home. Half-fee tuition waivers are available.

Saturday, February 20 – Nature and Electricity Project Day – 9 am – Noon.

Come ready to create an exciting project in the fields of nature or electricity. Team members from Living Lands and Waters will be on hand to share exciting stories and information about their river cleanup efforts. After presentations, youth will get to develop their own project in nature or electricity. This is a great opportunity for to prepare a science fair project or for those involved in 4-H Clubs to prepare a project for the fair. $10 per person, includes supplies.

Saturday, February 27 – First Aid for Kids – 9 am – Noon

With help from the Red Cross, students will learn the first aid basics and create a first-aid kit to take home. Great for babysitters, or scouts working on their badges. $10 per person, includes supplies.

SPECIAL EVENTS:

Rock Island County Extension Foundation will Hold 2nd Annual Trivia Lovers Fundraiser on Valentine's Day, Sunday, February 14 at the Milan Community Center.

Are you looking for something fun and unique to do this Valentine's Day? Gather your friends and loved ones to form a team of 8 for the Rock Island County Extension & 4-H Education Foundation's 2nd Annual "Green" Trivia fundraiser from 1:00 – 5:00 pm at the Milan Community Center. The event supports the "green" environmental, horticulture and agriculture programs offered by Rock Island County Extension; from the Homegrown Challenge purposeful gardening programs to the new Wednesday Farmer's Market coming to the Milan Extension office this summer, Rock Island County Extension is committed to helping the local community grow in their knowledge and opportunities in these areas.

Trivia MC Anthony Peoples, NewsChannel 8 meteorologist, will ask questions in a variety of categories: movies, music, sports, "green" environment, foods, TV Trivia, general, famous lovers, Presidents and general knowledge. The winning team will go home with $100. Doors open at noon, game starts at 1 PM. There will be a complimentary taco bar and free popcorn. Cash bar will be available. No outside snacks are allowed. Teams are encouraged to have a member decorate their table in a nature theme and one talented table decorator will be awarded a gardening-inspired prize basket valued at $100! In honor of Valentine's Day, a Dessert Silent Auction will be held. Winners will be announced at intermission so they can share their delicious desserts with their team members during the final rounds of the game. Businesses or individuals interested in donating a dessert to the Silent Auction should contact Becky at (309) 756-9978 Ext 12.
