Thankful for this year's many in-kind gifts…

As the holiday season draws near, the staff and faculty at Scott Community College are already thankful for the many in-kind gifts they have received this year. Scott Community College strives to remain valuable to the higher educational needs of the community. The demands to make sure the students are given the best education possible with real-life teaching tools is growing and so is the need for donations and support to acquire such items. The college's needs are plenty with faculty looking for various classroom models, laboratory equipment, informational technology, automobiles and more.

This year the Diesel Technology program received donated diesel equipment from Volvo Trucks North America , John Deere - Waterloo, Case New Holland – Burlington, and Eaton Corporation that included: (4) Carroro four-wheel drive transmissions, (11) hydro pilot valves, (2) rear axles, (2) hydro pumps, (4) B-series Cummins 4-cylinder engines, (6 each) shorts and long RAMS, (2) Eaton transmissions and (10) 2.4 liter diesel engines with stands and a D-16 Volvo engine. These in-kind donations are valued at more than $125,000.

Ken Hunter, Diesel Technology instructor says, "These donations are a blessing for our program and most of all for our students. Having this quantity of the same make and model of equipment is vital to the student's success. We now can teach and learn from the same models making our instruction applicable." Just last week, Ken and Frank Spies, a recently retired Diesel Technology instructor, made two trips to Case New Holland in Burlington, Iowa to pick-up the most recent in-kind donations. "We talked on our drive about what these gifts mean to the program. Some of this equipment will serve us for more than ten years. These donations have also opened up new training opportunities for us on ag-construction engines. We are very thankful for the support. We feel very blessed."

"It's donations like these that help us serve our students better today for their future role in our community," said Lysa Hegland, Scott Community College Assistant to the President & Foundation Director. "As the end of the year draws near, we want to be sure to tell others to check with the Foundation if they have items they would like to consider donating to the college. All gifts to the Scott Community College Foundation are tax deductible."

Most letters this time of year include wishes like, "Dear Santa I've been good this year, please bring me a bike, puppy or pony." The Scott Community College faculty and staff have their own wish list they would like to share with Santa's little helpers. The college's in-kind wish list is continually updated and maintained on the Foundation's website at www.eicc.edu/sccfoundation.
