Press release submitted by German American Heritage Center

This weekend, new exhibit, "Christmas Villages of Germany, Austria and Slovenia" and Christikindlmart Holiday Market open at the German American Heritage Museum in Davenport, Iowa

The new exhibit, Christmas Villages of Germany, Austria and Slovenia opens and the gift shop will transform into the Christikindlmart Holiday Market at the new German American Heritage Center & Museum. Christikindlmart will feature several imported items from Germany, including cookies, candy, nutcrackers, smokers, steins, linens, crystal, candles, tree toppers, inge-glass ornaments and more! Holiday gift memberships are $5 off regular membership during the Christkindlmarkt market.

The Christmas Village exhibit includes the Bethlehem Christmas village and Nativity scene. Look closely, and you will see hand-carved wooden figures that represent the craftsmanship of the artisans who created them in the 1700s and 1800s. The village exhibit includes the collection of Arlene Rose Considine, of Clinton, Iowa. This exhibit opens to the public on Friday, November 20 (A member-only preview will be held on November 19 from 4:30 - 7 p.m). Over the years, she found these treasures in Christmas markets, antique shops and flea markets in Slovenia, Austria and Germany. The exhibit includes about 100 houses. Many were painted by Arlene Considine of Clinton, Iowa and Geri Scheckel Evans of Preston, Iowa. These houses will be nestled among the vintage and log houses. A 7-foot German feather tree decorated with German ornaments from 1850 -1930 will also be displayed. Additional unique German ornaments will also be showcased.

Visitors can also explore the new large interactive permanent exhibit, "The German-American Immigrant Experience" and rotating exhibit "A to Zither." The fascinating permanent exhibit is a highly interactive, audiovisual and intergenerational experience. The exhibit begins at an era 2,000 years before Germany unified. Enjoy an interactive experience as you learn about immigrants' journey by sea, train and foot, to their final destination at the German American Heritage Center building, which was originally a very busy hotel for thousands of immigrants in the 1860s. Two original hotel rooms are included. The second half of the exhibit shows contributions to the region by immigrants, and highlights daily life, from recreation, family life, religion and organizations.
