School guidelines for Geneseo students attending athletic events has worked well so far, according to district officials.
The policy was implemented at the start of the school year, said Geneseo School District 228 Superintendent Scott Kuffel. Rules where students can sit during games and loitering prohibitions in any part of the football stadium or gymnasium outside the designated areas. Middle and elementary school students also have restrictions.
"We did this at the start of the year, because we had trouble with parents dropping six, eight and 10 kids off," said school board president Doug Ford said. "If there was an issue with a kid, there was no parent to be found to deal with it.
"We went out and surveyed all of the other NCIC districts, took a compilation of those and made a policy," he said. "It's worked really well, in all honesty."
The district has received comments for and against the policy, Mr. Ford said, noting a majority favored the policy.
"Some parents think it is taking the fun out for kids," he said. "For the most part, though, it has fixed our discipline problems."
Mr. Kuffel said middle school students were required to sit in the south end zone down by the goal posts during football games. The students were a lot more engaged in the games, he said.
"They loved to watch the extra points go over their heads," Mr. Kuffel said.
"The indoor sports, it really wasn't much of a problem," he said. "For volleyball, basketball and wrestling, we don't have the same issues. We think young children should be accompanied by their parent or a young adult."
Middle school students sitting in bleacher sections, for example, only can leave at the end of the first and third quarters. They will have 10 minutes to visit restrooms and the concession stand before they must return to their bleacher section.
Parents or guardians can pick up students from the designated area to have them sit with them or leave the sporting event at any time.
All students are prohibited from bringing skateboards, bicycles, rollerblades and balls into the gymnasium or football stadium. Elementary students must be in the presence of their parent or guardian at all times, including restroom and concession stand visits.
"We wanted to make sure the stadium was as safe as it could be for people," Mr. Kuffel said. "That is for both children, who are often unattended and running around the facility, and older people who are just trying to get to their seat or the concession stand.
"We felt like there was a game there for people to watch and we hope this gives people a better atmosphere to enjoy the games."
