Mallards' Desrochers retires
It was just time, and time led him to the decision.
Jean Desrochers, former Quad City Mallards center, officially retired from hockey Friday at the age of 29 after playing in the first three games of the season during which he tallied two assists. He was not with the team when it traveled to Bloomington on Wednesday.
"At this point in my life, I'm 29, and I felt that it was time to move on from hockey and get into business," he said. "Even though I was there for a short time, I really enjoyed the organization and the fans. It has nothing to do with that."
Desrochers said he entered the season knowing this would be his final year of hockey, but didn't want it to end so soon.
"I really wanted to finish the season, but I just didn't feel I was going to be able to give 100 percent to the team and maybe it was time to move on."
To replace him, the Mallards have added 23-year-old Domenic Maiani, an Ohio State University product from Shelby Township, Mich. Maiani got his professional start during the 2007-08 season when he played three ECHL contests with the Johnstown Chiefs. He played his first full professional campaign in the CHL last season, splitting time with the Amarillo Gorillas (three games) and the Rockey Mountain Rage (46 games). He accumulated eight goals and 12 assists. He started this season in the CHL, playing one game with the Tulsa Oilers.
For Desrochers, the transition from hockey life to business life awaits.
"It's really tough, because I got to meet some great teammates -- that's the tough part," Desrochers said. "When you leave something you've been doing all your life, there are things you're going to miss -- the bus trips, the fans -- I'm probably never going to sign another autograph in my life."
Desrochers said he enjoyed his time in the QC, no matter the length. The Dalhousie, Quebec, native has a four-year business degree from Clarkson University in Potsdam, N.Y. and said he has some opportunities on the horizon.
"I'm crossing my fingers," he said.
