John Deere Planetarium presents holiday show in December
Press release submitted by Augustana Public Relations.
ROCK ISLAND -- The Quad City community is invited to add a meaningful note to their holiday season with the John Deere Planetarium's (820 38th St.) annual holiday show "Season of Light." The show will be offered at 7 p.m. on weekdays and at 2 p.m. on weekends from Dec. 5-17. Admission is free, but reservations are requested. The program is not recommended for children under age seven.
Since ancient times, cultures around the world have held festivals, lit candles, and prayed for light during the darkness of winter. "Season of Light" is a multimedia show that uses the planetarium's sky projector, music, and narration to tell how these holiday traditions relate to the winter sky. The show, which is narrated by National Public Radio's Noah Adams, also identifies several key winter constellations and shares speculations about the Star of Bethlehem. The presentation will be followed by a question-and-answer session with planetarium director Dr. Lee Carkner and director emeritus Dr. Mel Peterson.
Before and after the show, guests will be invited to browse the Getz-Rogers Gallery, which includes full-color images from the Hubble Space Telescope and a quarter-ton piece of the Canyon Diablo meteorite. Augustana's Fryxell Geology Museum, which features one of the best collections of minerals and fossils in the Midwest, also will be open weeknights from 7:30 p.m.-8:30 p.m. and Saturday and Sunday afternoons from 1 to 4 p.m. Highlights of the museum include a wall of glowing rocks, a cast of a Tyrannosaurus Rex skull, and a complete, 22-foot skeleton of Cryolophosaurus, a carnivorous dinosaur discovered in Antarctica by one of Augustana's own professors, Dr. William Hammer.
For reservations (requested), call (309) 794-7327 during weekday business hours. Doors will open 15 minutes before each program and guests who arrive late will not be admitted. To learn more about the John Deere Planetarium log on to http://helios.augustana.edu/astronomy.
