A giraffe that died at Niabi Zoo on Oct. 7 had heart problems, but the necropsy conducted by

the University of Illinois' veterinary hospital couldn't determine the source of three-year-old Jabu's problems.

"They were trying to figure out why this animal had a heart problem," said Niabi Zoo Director Tom Stalf said this morning. "We are awaiting one more test result.

"Our main concern was to make sure this giraffe did not have any type of illness that would affect the herd. They concluded it was specific to this animal.

"It looks like he was born with some digestive problems. All of his illnesses affected his heart."

Mr. Stalf said the zoo will not replace Jabu. Currently, there is one male and two female giraffes at the zoo.

"We have a breeding group at the zoo," he said. "In about a year, they'll be able to have babies."

Tests were also conducted at various labs throughout the country, Mr. Stalf said. He said he was not surprised by the concerns from the community regarding Jabu.

"This community really supports Naibi Zoo," Mr. Stalf said. "They come out to see our new attractions. They mourn the loss just as our zoo staff mourns the loss of Jabu."

Jabu's body will be used for study by veterinary students at the university.
