Letter: In hards times, schools should not spend millions
In an era of such economic hard times, am I the only one who thinks Cal Lee and the Moline School Board should NOT be trying to spend $30 million on moving the 6th graders to junior high and new construction to our existing school buildings?
Who knows what kind of financial stresses may come to all Illinois school districts because, frankly, the state of Illinois is broke. Wouldn't that $30 million be better left for an emergency or funding that may not be covered by the state?
I suppose they figure they can just raise property taxes -- again. I have a friend whose daughter recently chose not to buy a home in Moline because the property taxes are so high. Do they really want people taxed out of their homes?
I have not heard what the reasons are to move the 6th graders and spend this money. What is to be gained by this? Will the class sizes get smaller? How will this improve education?
