East Moline vote helps Habitat
EASTMOLINE-- Aldermen voted during Monday's commitee-of-the-whole meeting to start transferring two residential properties to Habitat for Humanity Quad Cities.
The properties are at 905 20th St. and 1102 15th St.
"We would be very interested in building homes on those lots," said Margaret Haas of Habitat for Humanity QuadCities. There currently are eight Habitat homes in East Moline, she said, adding thanks to the city for its support.
Mayor John Thodos said Habitat offers a great way to get new homes into old neighborhoods. The group plans to build singl- family homes for low- and moderate-income families on the properties.
Also on Monday, aldermen declared a 1983 American Lafrance Telesquirt fire engine as surplus property, authorizing its donation to United Township High School. The truck didn't sell on eBay, and the school asked to use it in its fir fighting curriculum. The fire department has received paint and body work from the school at no cost before and plans to continue using those services.
Aldermen also scheduled a budget workshop for 5 p.m. Nov. 9.
