Letter: Reader horrified by U.S. throwing out Geneva Convention

I cannot let a recent column written by John Donald O'Shea go unanswered. Although I seldom agree with Mr. O'Shea, I was absolutely horrified when I read his article on the Oct.24 editorial page suggesting that the U.S. "unshackle itself from the restraints of the Geneva Convention and obliterate terrorists and their civilian shields". In my opinion, it is a sad day for our country when we have a public official granted the authority to make judicial decisions suggesting such actions. Mr. O'Shea is listed as a retired circuit court judge, and for that I am relieved. Whatever our political beliefs, one should be ashamed to publicly proclaim such views. Perhaps Mr. O'Shea would care to apologize to American citizens. Sincerely, Mary Taylor Matherville
