Author of "Inman's War" to visit Davenport library Nov. 3
Press release submitted by Angela Campbell, PR/programming coordinator, Davenport Public Library.
DAVENPORT -- "Inman"s War," a love story and a story of an African American school teacher who joined a "Colored Battalion" during World War II, is based on more than 150 letters sent between Inman and Olivia Perkins during the 1940s. The author, Dr. Jeffrey Copeland, also conducted interviews and in-depth research about African Americans during this time period to write this monumental book. Its themes explore racism, sexism, prejudice, and discrimination during a time when not much history was recorded from the perspective of African Americans.
Dr. Copeland will be at Davenport Public Library"s Fairmount Branch, 3000 N. Fairmount St., on Tuesday, Nov. 3, at 6 p.m., for a book talk of "Inman"s War," and a question and answer session. Registration is not required.
Dr. Copeland is currently chairman of the Department of English at the University of Northern Iowa. He is the author/editor of over 20 textbooks. "Inman"s War" has been nominated for the Horn Book Award, Jefferson Cup Award, Carter G. Woodson Award, Orbis Pictus Award, and American Library Association's "Notable Books for 2007" list.
This program is brought to the library in partnership with the African American Museum of Iowa. To learn more about the museum, visit www.blackiowa.org. To learn more of upcoming partnership programs, visit www.davenportlibrary.com.
