Trinity offers independent study Parish Nurse orientation course

Trinity"s Parish Nurse program is now offering a new orientation scheduling option for nurses interested in merging their health-care experience and their personal faith to better serve the community. Nurses may now begin the orientation at any time of the year by completing six independent study modules to better accommodate individual needs and church vacancies. Topics more appropriate for lecture and class discussion will continue to be offered through six weekly classes held in the fall.

The six scheduled sessions will be held from 6-9 p.m., Sept. 22, Oct. 6, 13, 20, 27 and Nov. 3 at Trinity VNHA, 106 19th Ave, Suite 101, Moline. Classes are open to registered nurses who have at least two years of nursing experience and a strong faith background. The course structure will consist of lectures, class activities and some independent study.

"This will be our 21st year of offering classes for registered nurses," said Linda Guebert, manager of Trinity"s Parish Nurse Program. "Many nurses gain personal and professional satisfaction from parish nursing. Not only do they feel they have answered a calling to a ministry, but they continue to learn through their clients and their congregation. By combining faith, knowledge, compassion and professionalism, parish nurses become a bridge between the reality of medicine and the solidarity of their faith."

According to Guebert, parish nurses aid members of the congregation in coping with various health conditions as well as answering questions they may have about their health. They provide assistance with health promotion, offer referral and advocacy, make home, hospital and nursing home visits, coordinate volunteers and assist with parishioners" spirituality. "The overall goal of each parish nurse is to improve the level of wellness in body, mind and spirit of the members in a faith community." The American Nurses Association recognizes parish nursing, also known as "Faith Community Nursing," as one of the specialties in nursing, with more than 10,000 parish nurses around the world.

As an educational partner with the International Parish Nurse Resource Center in St. Louis, Trinity"s course utilizes the curriculum developed by the Center. The course consists of 12 modules including history and overview of the Trinity Parish Nurse program, church culture and leadership, accountability of practice, health and spiritual issues across the lifespan, health promotion, grief and end of life issues, medical ethics, family dynamics, and emotional and spiritual wellness. Classes are open to registered nurses who have at least two years of nursing experience and a strong faith background. The course will conclude with an anointing service in which the participants" hands will be anointed with oil to signify that they will be the helping and healing hands of the church.

Trinity"s Parish Nurse Program originated in the Quad-Cities in 1989 as one of the Midwest"s first established hospital-organized programs. Currently consisting of 49 parish nurses and 50 churches representing 15 denominations, this program is a partnership between Trinity Regional Health System and churches in the Quad-Cities and surrounding areas.
