Mediacom Adds Four High-Def Channels to Family Cable; Food, Home & Garden, Speed and FX Enhance HD Roster
Moline, IL – March 19, 2009 – Mediacom Communications has added four more cable networks to its HD Family Cable line-up, giving television viewers in the Quad Cities and surrounding area high-definition (HD) reception for Home & Garden (HGTV), Food, FX and Speed. The HD additions are located at channels 757 - 761 (see list below).
The high-definition versions of these popular cable networks were added today to give consumers an expanded roster of HD choices through programming Mediacom makes available without additional cost to viewers equipped for high-definition reception. Mediacom will add another highly-viewed network, FOX News, to its HD line-up in the coming weeks.
"Throughout the past year we"ve expanded high-definition programming to offer the HD experience for more of the most popular television networks," said Cari Fenzel, Mediacom"s regional vice president. "The great value for our customers is that most of our high-def programming is automatically available as part of Mediacom Family Cable."
In addition to the move to HDTV, Fenzel said the world of television is changing to take advantage of improved digital technology. Customers with digital reception (separate from HD) are gaining more local and informational channels viewable in a digital channel spectrum and within a channel area for which there is no added cost. Two of the C-SPAN public affairs networks are part of Digital Basic, with C-SPAN 2 located at channel 87 and C-SPAN 3 at channel 88. Mediacom added C-SPAN 3 as a new offering and moved C-SPAN 2 from its previous location in Family Cable (analog). Mediacom Mainstreet also moved from analog channel 72 into Digital Basic, now at channel 124.
Mediacom customers will see a few other channel changes take effect this week, including the Discovery Channel move from 15 to 62, and the move of TBS from channel 17 to 44. ShopNBC has been added on channel 15 and ION appears on channel 44.
Consumers with digital cable service use a digital cable box that is distinctly different from a high-def cable box and can be used with any television. To receive high-definition reception, Fenzel said, customers must have an HD television and lease an HD converter box or cable card from Mediacom. HDTVs with built-in tuners can directly receive HD signals from local broadcast stations. To provide HD programming from cable networks, Mediacom leases HD cable boxes for the same price as a standard cable box.
Customers in Mediacom-served communities will find the new HDTV additions at the following channel locations:
Home & Garden (HGTV) HD, channel 757;
Food HD, channel 758;
FX HD, channel 760;
Speed HD, channel 761.
FOX News HD, to be launched in the coming weeks, will be located at channel 756. Other HD channels, including all local broadcast stations and major sports channels, are located between channels 703 and 791. Mediacom carries the primary HD channels of Starz, HBO and Showtime, as well as an expanding library of high-def movies recently released and available as pay-for-view selections.
