JEWEL-OSCO BRINGS FINANCIAL LITERACY EDUCATION TO LIFE FOR AREA YOUTH
Moline, IL - Jewel-Osco presented a check to Junior Achievement of the Heartland in support of JA Finance Park, a program that gives middle grade students an opportunity to develop personal money management skills, acquire personal financial knowledge, and prepare for the financial decisions and challenges of their later adult lives.
Jewel-Osco representatives presented the check while 90 eighth-grade students from Pleasant Valley Junior High School will be participating in the JA Finance Park on-site simulation at JA World.
JA Finance Park immerses middle grades students into the world of personal finance, allowing 14-year-olds to see, touch, and experience real-life situations on their own terms. During a six-week integrated curriculum taught during social studies, students explore:
Financial institutions: savings, investing, using debit cards, the advantages/risks of credit
Taxes: differences between sales, income, and property taxes
Budgeting: creating and maintaining a personal budget, making spending decisions
Career exploration: ability, interest, and values identification, career research
The program culminates with a 4 1/2-hour visit to JA World. The on-site activities are designed to allow students to apply learned concepts in a life-like community.
This is the fifth year Jewel-Osco has sponsored the food and grocery category for JA Finance Park. The food and grocery category is one of six industries that JA World is broken into during the on-site simulation. Students visit each area to gather information about products, determine budget best suited for their salary level and carry out the appropriate transactions to make a purchase. "Jewel-Osco is proud to continue its sponsorship with JA of the Heartland in providing the JA Finance Park program," stated La Toya Dixon, manager of community relations, Jewel-Osco.
"Now more than ever, JA"s financial literacy programs are needed to help young consumers gain the knowledge and confidence they need to make wise and responsible financial decisions," stated Barbara VenHorst, president, JA of the Heartland. "We are very grateful for Jewel-Osco"s partnership in providing JA Finance Park to area youth." By serving as a sponsor Jewel-Osco is helping fund the implementation costs associated with the program so more than 2,800 middle grade students in JA of the Heartland"s 24-county area may benefit from the financial literacy education JA Finance Park provides.
Other JA Finance Park sponsors include: The Amy Helpenstell Foundation, Bechtel Trusts & Foundation, Iowa American Water Company, Lujack"s Northpark Auto Plaza, Mel Foster Company and State Farm Insurance.
