The woman found dead in a Moline apartment Sunday morning was stabbed in the neck, officials said Monday. Moline police have identified the victim as Katherine D. Pedigo, 25. She was found in a first-floor apartment at 320 16th Ave. Sunday after firefighters responded to a fire at that address at 8:40 a.m. Officials say two fires had been intentionally set in the basement of the four-unit building. The state fire marshal's office said today (Tuesday) the fire was determined to be arson. An autopsy was performed Monday in Rockford to determine a cause of death, according to Brian Gustafson, Rock Island County deputy coroner. An inquest is pending. Authorities did not say when Ms. Pedigo died. Damage to the building was confined to the basement. The fire is being investigated as an arson. Dorothy McNamer, her choir teacher at Rock Island High School, described Ms. Pedigo as "enjoyable" and "very upbeat." "I enjoyed having her in choir," said Ms. McNamer. "She came in a bit later, but she really made a go of it." Ms. McNamer recalled Ms. Pedigo sang alto and started participating in choir during her sophomore year. In her senior year, Ms. Pedigo earned All-State honors. Ms. Pedigo was "surprised when she made all state," said Ms. McNamer. She added that, while singing, Ms. Pedigo "really had an enjoyable time." Services for Ms. Pedigo are pending at Wheelan-Pressly Funeral Home, Rock Island. Police are asking for anyone with information to contact the Criminal Investigations Division, (309) 797-0403 or Crime Stoppers, (309) 762-9500.
