Interstate 280 reopened about 9:30 this morning, according to Illinois State Police Master Sgt. Darin Johnson A weekend warm-up caused rivers to rise in their banks and some areas to flood, causing the closure of I-280 and other roads Sunday. Illinois State Police closed the eastbound and westbound lanes of I-280 afternoon due to flooding of the Rock River. National Weather Service meteorologist Bill Nichols said in addition to rapidly melting snow, flooding around I-280 and other areas was aggravated by ice jams in rivers and creeks. He said many county roads have been closed due to standing water. On Sunday, Mr. Nichols said he expected temperatures to fall below freezing and remain below freezing for the next five days, with the potential for light snow. The rapid return to cold temperatures will slow down any melting snow and ice. However, he said the ground cannot take much precipitation at this time, because it is saturated and frozen due to the many months of cold weather. Areas particularly impacted by weekend flooding or rising water included the Rock River, Green River and Duck Creek. Mr. Nichols said the area remains susceptible to more flooding depending on how much precipitation is received over the next several weeks. "We're just going to have to watch it very closely over the next several weeks," he said. "That's the bottom line."
