Raymond Grossman Services are 11 a.m. Tuesday at First Lutheran Church, Rock Island, where he was a member. The Rev. Gregory Mayer is officiating. Visitation is one hour prior to the service. Burial is in the National Cemetery, Arsenal Island. Memorials may be made to The Ray Grossman Scholarship at Augustana College or a charity of your choice. Trimble Funeral and Cremation Center, Moline, is assisting the family. Raymond Allen Grossman was born April 21, 1917, in Chicago, Ill., the son of Alex and Martha Frieden Grossman. He earned a B.A. in history from Augustana College and an M.S. in physical education from George Williams University in Chicago. He served in the Army during World War II with "The Fighting 36" in Italy and southern France. He received many medals including the Purple Heart, Bronze Star, and Silver Star and retired as a lieutenant colonel from the Army Reserves. He married Gladys Swanson on April 10, 1959, in Rock Island. Following the war, Ray was employed by the U.S. Department of Defense as a teacher on an American army base in Munich, Germany. He taught all of the physical education classes at the high school. In addition, he was their only coach for football, track, basketball and baseball. His Munich High football team won the European championship of DODD Schools in 1956. He returned to this area as a physical education professor and coach at Augustana College. Ray was instrumental in developing programs for several sports, including gymnastics, wrestling and soccer. He was the head wrestling coach and assisted in track and football. For many summers he was a lifeguard, taught swimming, and managed the pool at the R.I. Arsenal Club. During his long teaching career, Ray worked in Illinois, Florida, California and Nevada schools. He was qualified to teach a great variety of subjects, including history, math, science, English, physical education, and multiple languages. In recent years, he enjoyed substitute teaching at Rock Island High School. Ray was a member of Augustana's Tribe of Vikings and the Pi Upsilon Gamma fraternity. He trained horses for jumping competition in Europe and the United States and was a judge for the American Horse Shows Association Inc. He remained very active all his life, enjoying swimming and diving competitions as a senior, even diving in the California Master's Competition. In addition to his wife, he is survived by his daughter, Lucie Marinov, Apple Valley, Calif.; grandchildren, Gregory and Christine Marinoff, both of Apple Valley; stepdaughters, Vicki (Lee) Wassenhove, Milan, and Wendy Jeffries, Hemet, Calif.; and a sister, Isabelle Schmid, Chicago. Shirle Leman Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at the Tri City Jewish Center, Rock Island. Burial will be in Hebrew Cemetery, Rock Island. There is no visitation. Wheelan-Pressly Funeral Home, Rock Island, is assisting the family with arrangements. Memorials may be made to the Tri City Jewish Center or to the American Lung Association. The former Shirle Schaider was born on Feb. 21, 1922, in Rock Island, a daughter of Morris and Frances Slater Schaider. She married Phillip Leman on March 8, 1942, in Rock Island. He died Dec. 15, 1997. Shirle worked alongside her late husband at Phillips Furniture, Moline. She was a member of the Tri City Jewish Center, Rock Island, and the Center's Sisterhood. Shirle was also a member of Na'amat and B'nai B'rith Women. She served as a volunteer at the Col. Davenport home on Arsenal Island and with the American Heart Association. She enjoyed attending the many fine art activities in the Quad-Cities. Survivors include sons and daughters-in-law, Stuart and Susan Leman, Lake Geneva, Wis., Robert W. Leman, Rock Island and Bruce and Paula Leman, Corona, Calif.; granddaughter, Jennifer Jones and her husband, Josh, Santee, Calif.; and sister and brother-in-law, Arlene and William Sax, Moline. Carl Rose Services are 11 a.m. Wednesday at 2nd Baptist, Rock Island, with visitation at 10 a.m. to services. Burial is in Chippiannock Cemetery, Rock Island. Arrangements by Wheelan-Pressly, Rock Island. He was born Aug. 11, 1909. He worked at the Rock Island Arsenal. Surviving are children, Beverly, Marcia Wortham, Irma J. Davis, Sylvia Cunningham, Gilbert and Wayne; 13 grandchildren; 32 great-grandchildren; six great-great-grandchildren; sister, Florine Hines.
Stan Carlson A memorial service will be 1 p.m. Monday, Jan. 21, at Trinity Lutheran Church, 196 N. Ashwood Ave., Ventura, with the Rev. Dave Hall officiating. Contributions may be made in Stan's memory to a favorite charity or to Trinity Lutheran Church. Arrangements are under the direction of the Ted Mayr Funeral Home and Crematory, 3150 Loma Vista Road, Ventura. Mr. Carlson was born April 8, 1927, in Cambridge. He graduated from Moline High School in 1945. He met and married Gladys Peterson in 1952 in Moline and moved to the Ventura area in 1953. Stan had worked in the shoe department of J.C. Penney for 34 years, first in the original downtown Ventura location and then in the Buenaventura Mall location. He was manager of the department for many years before his retirement in 1987. It is safe to say that he had sold shoes to just about everyone in Ventura. Stan was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Ventura. He was a member of Masonic Lodge 633 and was master of the lodge in 1977 and 1991. In 2003, Stan received his 50-year pin from the Masonic Lodge. He was also a member of the Ventura Retired Business and Professional Men's Club, and he and his wife, Gladys, were active members of the Rig Runners RV Club and enjoyed monthly campouts. Stan will be remembered always for his contagious smile, his love for God and country and also for his story telling. He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Gladys Carlson; daughter, Debby Miyasaki; son, Jeff Carlson; grandchildren, Michael and Weston Miyasaki and Jeffrey Carlson Jr. and Joseph Carlson; sisters, Maxine Simkins, Lucille Reid and Florence Doye; brother, Dale Carlson; along with numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers. Burial will be in National Cemetery, Arsenal Island. A memorial fund has been established in the name of Mary Ann Mahieu. Mary Ann was born July 12, 1934, in Rathbun, Iowa, the daughter of Anthony and Helen Widmer Morris. She married Bernard A. Mahieu on April 18, 1953, in Moline. Mary Ann was the secretary for 40 years at Mahieu Electric, Moline. She was a 1951 Alleman High School graduate. Mary Ann was a former member of Sacred Heart Church, Moline. She enjoyed being with her grandchildren. She was a devoted fan of her children's and grandchildren's athletic and school activities. Mary Ann was an avid supporter of the Moline Maroons. Survivors include her husband, Bernard; sons and daughters-in-law, Mark and Sue Mahieu and children, Nikki and Kelly; Jeff Mahieu and Sonya Walker, and his children, Ashley and Cydney; Martin and Cindy Mahieu and children, Maggie and Ben; Michael and Angie Mahieu and children, Hallie, Luke, and Noah; and Bernard "Bam" Mahieu, all of Moline; sister and brother-in-law, Elaine and Richard Hoogerwerf, Farmington Hills, Mich.; and special friend, Regina Tsosie, and caregiver, Jen McHie, both of Moline. Jack Wendell Duncan was born Aug. 7, 1922, in New Boston, the son of Victoria Terry and Riley Duncan. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He married Dorothy Levena Turley on Oct. 23, 1948, in Galesburg. He was employed by Moline School District No. 40 as a school custodian for 30 years, retiring in 1984. He was a member of Moline American Legion Post No. 246 and enjoyed horseshoe pitching and fishing. Jack is survived by his wife, Dorothy; two sons and three daughters-in-law, Richard and Beverly Duncan, Bettendorf, David and Vicki Duncan, West Plains, Mo., and Dian Duncan, Geneseo; nine grandchildren and their spouses, Lynette and Jim Blaser, Debra and Ronald Wheeler, Lisa and Johnny Etter, Kimberly Hill, Matthew Duncan, Michael Camery, Jennifer and Mark Riggins, Scott Brockmeyer, and Amy Sargent; and 11 great-grandchildren. Harold was born on March 19, 1914, in Milan, the son of Clarence and Claudia Peebler Galusha. He married Dolores Larson on Aug. 26, 1940, in Iowa City, Iowa. Mrs. Galusha preceded her husband in death on Sept. 19, 2006. Harold worked as an assembler at the John Deere Plow & Planter Works, Moline, for over 30 years. Mr. Galusha's favorite passion was to go morel-mushroom hunting in early April; most of the mushrooms he collected he gave away to friends and family. He also enjoyed hunting. Harold loved his family and especially his grandchildren. Survivors include his daughter and son-in-law, Kay A. and Tom Carlson, Illinois City; grandchildren and their spouses, Kelly and John Muncie, Spring, Texas, Scott and Stacey Carlson, Illinois City, Beau Carlson, Illinois City; great-grandchildren, Luke, Jake, Maddie, Sawyer, Spencer and Zoe; sisters, Mary Magerkurth, Milan and Betty Hayden, Illinois City; and brothers, Clarence "Bud" Galusha, Milan, Claude "Andy" Galusha, Milan and Kenneth Galusha, Rock Island. Blanche was born March 11, 1919, in her home in the Eliza area, the daughter of John and Ella Barlett Diehl. She married Wayne Littrell on Sept. 5, 1943, in Aledo. He died Oct. 22, 1976. She enjoyed traveling the world, quilting, sewing, gardening, canning, doing jig-saw puzzles, reading and spending time with her family. Blanche worked at Younkers for several years. She was the head of the laundry department at the Mercer County Hospital until she retired in 1989. Helen `Babe' MillerHelen Geneva "Babe" Miller, 80, of North Henderson, died Friday, Jan. 18, 2008, at Rosewood Care Center, Galesburg. She was born Jan. 15, 1928, in Knox County, to Edward and Hattie Nelson Humes. Babe married George M. Miller in North Henderson on June 5, 1955. He died May 17, 2007. She worked at Swanson's Grocery in North Henderson for many years and retired from Cash's Locker in Alexis. Surviving are nieces and nephews.

She married Joseph Bernauer. He died in 2005.
