An anonymous donor has deposited the first gold coin of the season in a Salvation Army kettle. The surprise donation was left in a kettle at a Moline Hy-Vee Store this weekend. The $25 American Gold Eagle coin was minted in 2007 and was double-stamped. "It's always exciting when we receive a gold coin," said Maj. Barbara Shiels, Heritage Temple Corps officer, in a media release. "It creates such excitement as we count the kettles at the end of the day, and we are so very grateful to the wonderful donor." The half-ounce coin, according to officials, is valued at about $416.15 at current gold prices. By selling it, the Salvation Army could help provide food and shelter for two families for a week, send five children to camp or send 20 children to day camp. The Red Kettle campaign started Nov. 17 and runs until Dec. 24. Funds raised support Salvation Army programs for the entire year.
