An anonymous donor has stepped forward to pay for engraving Sgt. Jessica Housby's name on the Rock Island County war memorial.
The man stopped in Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1303, Rock Island, Thursday, to make the offer, said P.J. Hymes, Rock Island County VFW Council commander.
Mr. Hymes asked Rock Island County Board Chairman Jim Bohnsack earlier this week if the county would pay for the engraving because the council didn't have the money for it. The council paid for Sgt. Landis Garrison's name to be engraved after his death in April 2004.
The donor said he would pay the stonecutter, Art Stone Monument Company in Rock Island, directly, Mr. Hymes said. The company has told Mr. Hymes that Sgt. Housby's name will be engraved on the stone monument before Memorial Day ceremonies.
The council will host a spaghetti dinner fundraiser at Post 1303 May 7. Money raised will be used to cover future financial obligations. Mr. Hymes figures Sgt. Housby won't be the last name added to the war memorial.
