Moline grads `all winners'

By Shayla Thiel

MOLINE -- As Moline High School's Class of '94 walked under the enormous "M''
into Wharton Field House last night, that maroon letter represented more than
just its alma mater.

For some, it stood for memories they would soon leave behind. For others, it
was another "Moment in Time,'' a verse in the class commencement program.

The graduates were somewhat apprehensive but confident of the future -- and
relieved at the prospect of a diploma.

"We're all winners in this game,'' Blake Hornbuckle, class president, said in
his welcoming address. "We have succeeded in our first challenge in our life.
We will continue to believe -- in others and ourselves -- and we will make a
difference in everything we do.''

Graduate Chad Pankey was simply ready to move on, he said as he mingled with
friends before commencement.

"I'm just glad I'm outta here,'' said Mr. Pankey. "School was fun, but
graduation is better.''

Classmate Venita Palmer was more nervous before the ceremony. "It's scary
because we're moving on to a whole new realm of life,'' said Ms. Palmer.

In her class address, "C.R.O.,'' graduate Heide Valerius advised classmates
to embrace three things in life: challenges, risks and opportunities.

"Life is filled with these. Risk is one of the biggest we're seeing now and
sometimes we think of it as a negative thing,'' said Ms. Valerius."However, a
world without risks lacks success, love and inspiration. Risk means failure,
but most of all, risk means success.''

When they weren't busy snapping photos, the graduates' parents were often
teary-eyed. Throughout the ceremony, many expressed confidence in the students
and satisfaction with the school's after-graduation party, Project Graduation,
held Friday night at the Moline YMCA.

"It's exciting and sad at the same time,'' said Judy Rhyne, mother of
graduate Katie Rhyne. "But I know the kids are real excited to finish up and
then get to the party tonight.''

"I am totally excited and happy,''said Lisa Munoz, after tossing her hat into
the air. "I'm going to the University of Iowa next year with my best friend,
whom I've known since I was 3, so I'm just glad to be done.''

Like Ms. Munoz, Zach Soliz was thinking about school friends and the future.

"I'm looking forward to the next four years at Black Hawk College,'' said
Mr. Soliz. "I'll miss my friends but not classes or tests.''

However, graduate Bob Campeau reminded the class that friends could certainly
remain close -- if only in spirit -- in his address, "A Celebration of
Friendship.'' As the classmates looked at one another upon Mr. Campeau's
request, some cried, some giggled. It was clear many knew exactly what he was
talking about.

"When we walk out that door tonight, our high school careers will be over,
but never our friendships,'' said Mr. Campeau. "Just because we are spread
around the country next year, it doesn't mean we can't be close.''
