UTHS graduates `off to great places'

"Dare to be different,

Hope to be strong,

Strive for success;

Let your hopes lead you on.''

-- United Township High School Class of 1994 motto

EAST MOLINE -- It was an afternoon for rhyme and reason as more than 400
seniors graduated from United Township High School in East Moline Sunday.

Valedictorian Patricia Reidl told classmates to put aside past mistakes,
refocus their lives and set new goals. Her speech centered on Dr. Seuss' book,
"Oh, the Places You'll Go.''

"We must accept the responsibilities that go along with being a high-school
graduate,'' said Ms. Reidl. She concluded with a line in the book: "You're
off to great places, so get on your way.''

Salutatorian Danielle Jordan quoted from another great literary figure,
Charles Dickens, as she summarized the students' time together at United
Township and urged students to move on, but to treasure the memories.

" `It was the best of times, it was the worst of times. It was the age of
wisdom, it was the age of foolishness,' ''she recited. "Memories are made to
be kept somewhere ... in our hearts and in our minds.''

R. Craig Whitlock, superintendent of United Township High School District,
mentioned the 50th anniversary of D-Day in his presentation to the class and
wished the graduates a prosperous life, devoid of the hardships of war.

"It is my hope you will not have to experience anything like D-Day or World
War II, the Korean War, Vietnam and Desert Storm,'' Mr. Whitlock said. "I'm
thankful for the book `Everything I Ever Needed to Know, I Learned in
Kindergarten' by Robert Fulgham. He wrote, `Life will present you with
inconveniences and problems. The trick is to know the difference.''

The graduates generally were excited after the ceremony, but some expressed
apprehensiveness about the future.

"I'm just happy to get on with my life,'' said Eric Wietlispach, East Moline.
"It'll be great not to have to get up so early anymore.''

Jason Dowdal, Green Rock, was elated at the prospect of being finished. "It's
about time,'' said Mr. Dowdal. "It feels great,''

"I'm excited, but I still feel kind of scared about leaving the security of
high school, where you always know where you stand,'' said Jackie Wynes,
Silvis.

Others were simply sentimental about the day.

"I feel sad because I'll miss everyone, and because this is the last time
we'll all be together as a cass,'' said Jennifer Metcalf, East Moline.

Classmate Jennifer Roberts, East Moline, agreed, but said it was a relief to
finally be finished with classes. "It is sad, but I'm glad it's over,'' she
said as she stood in line to return her cap and gown. "I'm ready to move
on.''
