Caramel Crunch Apple Pie

Comment on this recipe

I found this recipe in cookbook I bought in 1982 at Midwest Old Threshers in Mt. Pleasant, Iowa. It's fun to make this time of year with the fresh apples available. It's also great tasting. Makes a great dessert for Halloween or anytime.

Ingredients

28 caramels
2 tablespoons water
6 cups tart cooking apples, peeled and sliced
9-inch unbaked pie shell
1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
1/3 cup butter or margarine
1/2 cup chopped walnuts
3/4 cup flour
1/3 cup sugar

Instructions

Melt caramels with water in top of double boiler over boiling water, stirring occasionally until melted and smooth. Layer apples and caramel sauce alternately in pie shell. Combine flour, sugar and cinnamon, mixing well. Cut in butter or margarine until like coarse crumbs. Stir in nuts. Sprinkle evenly over apples. Bake at 375 degrees. 40-45 minutes or until done.
